The graph below shows the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in one country between 2011 and 2018.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates the annual number of shop closures and shop openings in a single country over an eight-year period, from 2011 to 2018.

Overall, it is evident that both shop closures and openings experienced a general downward trend over the period, with openings consistently lagging behind closures. Notably, the number of new shops reached its lowest point in 2015, while closures peaked in 2013, before both metrics stabilised in the final years.

In 2011, the number of shop closures stood at approximately 8,600, significantly higher than the 6,600 openings recorded that year. The following year, closures fell sharply to 5,900, while openings also declined to 3,900, representing the lowest figure for openings at that point. However, 2013 saw a dramatic reversal, with closures soaring to a peak of 7,200, while openings increased more moderately to 5,000.

From 2014 onwards, both trends exhibited notable fluctuations. Closures decreased to 6,600 in 2014 before dropping further to 4,000 in 2016, after which they stabilised at around 5,000 between 2017 and 2018. In contrast, shop openings, after reaching a high of 8,500 in 2015, plummeted to just 4,000 in 2016, a decline of more than half. Thereafter, the number of new shops levelled off at approximately 4,200 in 2017 and then fell slightly to 3,000 in 2018.

In conclusion, the data reveals a persistently challenging environment for retailers, with the number of closures exceeding openings in most years. The most striking feature was the dramatic rise in new shops in 2015, which proved short-lived, followed by a sharp decline that left the sector with fewer openings than at any other point in the period.
